The Healthy Appetite: Holiday Detox Smoothie
The last 3 days were jam-packed with Christmas parties and family gatherings, and for me that means 3 things: endless yummy food, wine flowing like water, and chocolate everywhere I turn. I looove all the treats I get to enjoy around Christmas time, but I woke up this morning and I was seriously craving something healthy and refreshing.
A frosty smoothie packed with fruit sounded amazing, so I pulled out the blender and started reminiscing about my days as a visor-wearing Jamba Juice employee back in high school (embarrassing, I know--but I did get pretty good at making smoothies!). I learned that the secret to a thick, creamy smoothie is frozen fruit instead of ice, so I started digging around my parents'' freezer...I found some frozen strawberries and blackberries, and even some frozen kale!
I was a little skeptical about using the kale, but I keep seeing green smoothies everywhere so I figured I''d throw some in and give it a try. Combined with fresh bananas, clementines, and vanilla soymilk, the finished product is full of flavor and perfect for detoxing after Christmas. Get creative with this recipe and try substituting your favorite fresh or frozen fruits and greens to make your own personal detox smoothie, and let me know how it goes!
Ingredients1 cup frozen fruit (I used strawberries and blackberries)
1/2 cup frozen kale (or probably a few handfuls of fresh kale)
2 clementines, peeled and cut into chunks
Combine all ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth, adding more soymilk if necessary to achieve desired thickness.
