Getting Fit For Summer A Head Start

It’s time to start the fitness for summer campaign – lose that winter fat in time for a great beach body

The warmer months are a great time to lose weight and improve your fitness for summer with beach season just around the corner. As the temperature starts to get higher, layers are being shed and the hemlines start rising, it’s even more reason to lose weight so you can fit into your cossie. Here are some great tips to boost your health and fitness, change your lifestyle and get beach ready.

Before you start on a weight loss program and get fit for summer, it’s an ideal time to have an internal spring clean. Giving up smoking, reducing your alcohol intake, decreasing caffeine drinks and cutting down on processed foods are some important steps you can take to detoxing and cleansing your body.  Spring cleaning our bodies is an essential part of shedding our winter coats and preparing for the summer months.

Spring is a great time to start exercising outdoors and take advantage of the warmer weather. Take exercise outdoors and go jogging at the beach, join a summer boot camp, go swimming or bushwalking. Other fun outdoor activities include beach volleyball, horse riding, rock climbing, tennis, kayaking and surfing. This is a great way to burn calories while having a lot of fun in the process.

With spring fruits and vegetables coming into season, you can make delicious smoothies, fresh juices and salads. Research shows that if you eat a light salad or soup as an entree before a main meal, you are more likely to consume fewer calories over the course of the meal. There are a lot of meals you can make with fruits and vegetables so get out your recipe book and start getting creative.

Watching your weight and increasing your fitness for summer is a numbers game; not only are you monitoring the scales, you should also be keeping a tab on your daily calories. Keeping a food diary is a good way to monitor exactly what you are eating. It’s not the calories you’re monitoring but incidental calories which may add to your calorie count and contribute to excess calories.

As well as doing cardio, weight lifting is important for weight loss, building muscle and strength and increasing your fitness for summer. For weight loss, it’s best to balance a cardio workout with a weights program to increase your metabolism so you burn more calories. Before starting a weights program, consult a fitness professional to maximise your fitness and weight loss goals and reduce risk of injury.

The countdown to summer is on so grab your shorts and singlet and head off to the gym, your local park or to the beach. Whether you’re exercising in the gym or outdoors, in a group or individually, make sure you warm up your muscles, and leave time for a cool down with a period of stretches. Remember before beginning your new exercise program to get fit for summer you should consult your doctor.
