We often tend to neglect dental health. Let me be specific – teeth are the most neglected part of the body;though it is such a vital part. This is necessary because, statistics reveal that about 50% of children between 12 and 15 years of age are suffering from cavities. What also needs to be understood by most individuals is that teeth decay sets in as we age and therefore taking good care of our teeth is a must. Closely monitoring dental health as you age will go a long way in maintaining good and healthy teeth.

Selecting the right toothpaste for your teeth also forms an essential part of an appropriate dental care regime.Fluoride is considered to be the best in maintaining a good oral hygiene. It prevents tooth decay in children as well as adults. Using toothpaste or rinses containing high concentration of fluoride can help you maintain a healthy and germ free teeth. It is also necessary that you change your toothbrushes at least 4 – 5 times a year.
Flossing at least once a day helps prevent as well as remove plaque formation. It is necessary to remove plaque every day. The bacteria in plaque can cause development of gum problems which can lead to gingivitis and several other dental diseases and gum problems at a later stage. Plaque is basically a mass of bacteria that needs to be removed on daily basis. If not, then it can gradually cause tooth decay.
Oral and dental hygiene also has a lot to do with the food that we eat. Eating high sugar foods makes room for the development of bacteria. What happens is, every time you eat sugary foods your teeth get exposed to the sugar present in food for 20 minutes or more which is capable enough for causing tooth decay. The food can even get accumulated in between teeth favoring the development of bacteria which in the long run destroys the teeth enamel. Therefore, if you cannot do without snacks then make sure you chew a sugar free gum after that.
If you are smoker, refrain from smoking tobacco; it can cause tooth decay, gingivitis and oral cancer. In addition, smokers also have stained teeth and bad breath. Therefore, to avoid all these tooth problems to sneak it is better to keep away from tobacco in all possible forms.
It is necessary that you visit your dentist regularly for getting your teeth checked. It is especially important for individuals suffering from diabetes and even pregnant women.You also need to see your dentist regularly if you are wearing braces. A good practice of removing stains and bacteria buildup in the mouth is to gargle with apple cider vinegar in the morning.
Therefore it does need reemphasis that good dental hygiene begins at home. Practicing good hygiene and taking care of your teeth will go a long way in giving you stronger and whiter teeth.
